Quick Summary / TL;DR

A two-step equation requires exactly two inverse operations to isolate x. Work in reverse order of operations (SADMEP): Step 1: Undo addition or subtraction first. Step 2: Undo multiplication or division to get x completely by itself. Whatever you do to one side of the equal sign, you must do to the other!

Core Equation / Rule:
ax + b = c ⟹ Step 1: ax = c - b ⟹ Step 2: x = c - ba

The 4-Step Solving Process

1

Identify What Operations are Acting on X

3x + 5 = 20 ⟹ Multiplication by 3, Addition of 5

Look at the side with the variable. Find the operation furthest from x (the constant number) and the operation attached directly to x (the coefficient).

💡 Pro Tip: Think of unwrapping a gift: remove the outer wrapping paper (the added/subtracted constant) before opening the inner box!
2

Undo Addition or Subtraction (Inverse Operation)

3x + 5 - 5 = 20 - 5 ⟹ 3x = 15

If a number is added, subtract it from both sides. If a number is subtracted, add it to both sides.

💡 Pro Tip: Keep the equals sign lined up vertically so both sides of your work stay clearly balanced.
3

Undo Multiplication or Division

3x3 = 153 ⟹ x = 5

If x is multiplied by a coefficient, divide both sides. If x is in the numerator of a fraction, multiply both sides by the denominator.

💡 Pro Tip: If dividing by a negative number, keep the negative sign with the denominator so x becomes positive!
4

Substitute Back to Verify Your Answer

3(5) + 5 = 15 + 5 = 20 ✓

Plug your value for x back into the original equation to prove both sides equal the same number.

💡 Pro Tip: Checking takes 10 seconds and guarantees 100% test accuracy before you turn in your worksheet!

What is a Two-Step Equation?

A two-step equation is an algebraic equation that requires exactly two inverse operations to solve for the unknown variable x.

The fundamental rule of algebra is the Golden Rule of Balance:

Whatever inverse operation you do to one side of the equal sign, you must do to the other side to keep the equation balanced.

The Secret Strategy: Reverse Order of Operations (SADMEP)

When calculating arithmetic expressions, you follow PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction).

When solving for an unknown variable, you do the exact opposite—you unwrap the variable in reverse order:

\mathbf{S - A - D - M - E - P}
  1. S / A: Undo Subtraction and Addition first.
  2. D / M: Undo Division and Multiplication second.

Worked Example 1: Standard Two-Step Equation

Problem:

Solve for x:

4x + 9 = 33

Step 1: Undo the addition of 9

The opposite of + 9 is - 9. Subtract 9 from both sides:

4x + 9 - 9 = 33 - 9
4x = 24

Step 2: Undo the multiplication of 4

The coefficient 4 is multiplied by x. The inverse operation is division. Divide both sides by 4:

4x4 = 244
x = 6

Step 3: Check your answer

Substitute x = 6 back into the original equation:

4(6) + 9 = 24 + 9 = 33 ✓

The equation is balanced, so x = 6 is guaranteed correct!

Interactive Practice Check
Solve for $x$: $5x - 8 = 27$. Step 1: Add 8 to both sides to get $5x = 35$. What is the value of $x$ after dividing both sides by 5?

Worked Example 2: Equations with Fractions and Negatives

Many students get nervous when they see fractions or negative numbers, but the two steps never change!

Problem:

Solve for x:

x-3 - 7 = -2

Step 1: Undo subtraction first

The opposite of - 7 is + 7. Add 7 to both sides:

x-3 - 7 + 7 = -2 + 7
x-3 = 5

Step 2: Undo the division

x$ is currently divided by $-3$. The inverse of dividing by $-3$ is **multiplying by $-3$**. Multiply both sides by $-3$:

\left(\frac{x}{-3}\right) \times (-3) = 5 \times (-3)

x = -15

### Step 3: Check your answer

\frac{-15}{-3} - 7 = 5 - 7 = -2 \quad \checkmark

Both sides match $-2$, so **$x = -15$**! --- ## Special Variation: Entire Expression Over a Denominator > **Problem:** > Solve: $x + 54 = 6

Here, the entire expression x + 5 is grouped on top of the fraction bar (which acts like parentheses!).

In this specific case, multiply by the denominator first:

  1. Multiply both sides by 4:
(x + 5) = 6 × 4 ⟹ x + 5 = 24
  1. Subtract 5 from both sides:
x = 24 - 5 = 19

Quick Reference Summary

Equation TypeExampleStep 1 (S/A)Step 2 (D/M)Solution
Standard3x + 7 = 22Subtract 7: 3x = 15Divide by 3x = 5
Negative Coefficient-2x - 5 = 11Add 5: -2x = 16Divide by -2x = -8
Fraction Divisionx5 + 3 = 10Subtract 3: x5 = 7Multiply by 5x = 35
Grouped Fractionx - 42 = 8Multiply by 2: x - 4 = 16Add 4x = 20
⚠️WATCH OUT

Don't Forget Negative Signs on Coefficients!

If you have -4x = 20, dividing both sides by 4 leaves -x = 5. Always divide by the full coefficient including its sign (-4), so x = -5.
