Quick Summary / TL;DR

Solving an inequality is almost identical to solving an algebraic equation: isolate the variable using inverse operations. There is just ONE crucial exception: whenever you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, you MUST reverse (flip) the inequality symbol!

Core Equation / Rule:
The Golden Rule: -cx < d ⟹ x > -dc (Divide by negative ⟹ FLIP < to >)

The 4-Step Solving Process

1

Simplify Both Sides of the Inequality

2(x - 3) + 4x > 18 ⟹ 2x - 6 + 4x > 18 ⟹ 6x - 6 > 18

Clear parentheses using the distributive property, then combine like terms on each side.

💡 Pro Tip: Keep both sides balanced—do not move terms across the inequality symbol yet.
2

Collect Variable Terms on One Side

5x + 3 < 2x + 12 ⟹ 5x - 2x + 3 < 12 ⟹ 3x + 3 < 12

Add or subtract variable terms so all variables are on the left side of the symbol.

💡 Pro Tip: Keeping the variable on the left side makes graphing on a number line much easier to read!
3

Isolate the Variable with Inverse Operations

3x + 3 < 12 ⟹ 3x < 9 ⟹ x < 3

Add or subtract the constant term from both sides, then multiply or divide by the coefficient.

💡 Pro Tip: Addition and subtraction NEVER flip the inequality sign, even if you are subtracting a negative number!
4

Apply the Sign Flip Rule (If Negative)

-4x ≤ 20 ⟹ x ≥ 20-4 ⟹ x ≥ -5

If you divide or multiply both sides by a negative coefficient, flip < to > or ≤ to ≥.

💡 Pro Tip: The flip only triggers if the number doing the dividing is negative—not if the answer is negative!

What is an Inequality?

An inequality compares two mathematical values using inequality signs instead of an equal sign:

  • •<: Less than (open circle on number line)
  • •>: Greater than (open circle on number line)
  • •≤: Less than or equal to (closed / solid circle)
  • •≥: Greater than or equal to (closed / solid circle)

Unlike equations that typically have one exact answer (like x = 4), inequalities represent a whole range of numbers (like x > 4, which includes 4.1, 5, 100, \dots).

The Golden Rule: When to Flip the Sign

The most famous rule in algebra is:

Whenever you MULTIPLY or DIVIDE both sides by a NEGATIVE number, you MUST FLIP the inequality sign!

* < flips to >

* > flips to <

* ≤ flips to ≥

* ≥ flips to ≤

Why does this happen? Intuitive Proof:

Consider a true statement:

2 < 5

Now multiply both numbers by -1:

  • •Left side becomes -2
  • •Right side becomes -5

Which is bigger: -2 or -5?

On a thermometer or number line, -2$ is warmer (greater) than $-5!

Therefore:

-2 > -5

The sign had to flip to keep the statement mathematically true!

Worked Example 1: Standard Two-Step Inequality

Problem:

Solve and describe the number line graph:

3x - 7 > 8

Step 1: Add 7 to both sides

3x - 7 + 7 > 8 + 7
3x > 15

(Note: Adding never flips the sign!)

Step 2: Divide both sides by 3

3x3 > 153
x > 5

(Note: 3 is positive, so the sign stays as >!)

How to Graph x > 5 on a Number Line:

  1. Put an open circle at 5 (because 5 is not included).
  2. Shade an arrow pointing to the right towards larger numbers (6, 7, 8, \dots).

Interactive Practice Check
Solve the inequality: $-4x + 6 ≤ 22$. Step 1: Subtract 6 from both sides to get $-4x ≤ 16$. Now divide both sides by $-4$. What is the final inequality for $x$?

Worked Example 2: Multi-Step with Sign Flip

Problem:

Solve the multi-step inequality:

-5x + 12 ≥ 37

Step 1: Subtract 12 from both sides

-5x + 12 - 12 ≥ 37 - 12
-5x ≥ 25

Step 2: Divide both sides by -5

Here comes the golden rule! Because we are dividing by -5, the ≥ symbol flips to ≤:

-5x-5 ≤ 25-5
x ≤ -5

Final Answer: x ≤ -5.

How to Graph x ≤ -5:

  1. Place a solid, closed circle at -5 (because of the "or equal to" bar).
  2. Shade an arrow pointing to the left towards smaller numbers (-6, -7, \dots).

When NOT to Flip the Sign!

Many students flip the sign whenever they see ANY minus sign in a problem.

If you solve 4x = -20 ⟹ x = -5, the sign does NOT* flip because the number dividing (4) is positive!

* Only flip when the number attached to x that you are dividing or multiplying by is negative.
